16 Apr Cape May County Introduces New Purchasing Portal
COURT HOUSE — Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton announced that the County Purchasing Department is using a new purchasing portal to conduct county business. The new portal, purchased via SHI International Corp., is an interactive website that enables vendors to learn about purchasing opportunities with Cape May County.
“There are many savings and efficiencies associated with simplifying the purchasing process,” Director Thornton said. “Photocopying, postage and the amount of hours employees spend mailing and faxing documents are eliminated when the vendor downloads their bid package from the website. Also, the portal provides us the opportunity to reach a larger audience.”
Since the county first started using a purchasing portal in 2007, the number of first time vendors doing business with the county has increased. Through the portal, vendors must register their company with Cape May County; provide contact information and their New Jersey Business Registration Certificate. Vendors can then select the types of contracts they would like to be notified about from a list of 75 commodities.
In addition to goods and services, construction and public works projects are now also accessible via the website. Instructions, specifications and necessary forms can be downloaded directly from the website. However, vendors are still required to mail or hand-deliver their bid Responses to the Office of the County Administrator.
Purchasing Agent Kim Allen added, “The new portal is easier to navigate, maintain and provides an excellent tracking tool. Because the new portal is web based, posting of any material is real-time. A vendor that is registered and downloads a Request for Bid will automatically be emailed or faxed any new data that is posted by the Purchasing Department.”
Users of the portal can search the portal by opportunity type, price, category, posting date, due date and can view all public records information regarding the purchasing process after the bid is awarded.
